Project Scope and Objectives

DiveSafe will integrate a number of diving-related technologies, equipmen tand apps into a comprehensive solution allowing for more efficient and safe scientific and professional diving missions. Underwater sites are inevitably difficult to access and more hazardous, compared to dry land. To address this challenge, the project integrates SoTA technologies, in order to deliver to the diving market (primarily professional/scientific and secondarily recreational) an innovative product that will allow divers to safely and efficiently conduct underwater surveys for accomplishing tasks related to visual census, photographic and photogrammetric documentation, exploration of unknown areas, search and recovery, touristic visit of wide underwater sites, etc.

DiveSafe consortium kick off meeting took place at the ATLANTIS offices in Thessaloniki, Greece on the 13th of February 2019. The meeting was broken into two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning session was dedicated to the overall project presentation, partners’ presentation, and presentation of the WPs by the responsible partner for each one of them. During the evening session, financial / administrative issues of the project were presented by the Project Coordinator, and the 1st Steering Committee meeting was held.

Expected Projects Results

  • The DiveSafe breakthrough product, demonstrated and validated at Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) pilot sites.
  • DiveSafe product labelled for DL compliance.
  • The DiveSafe community of stakeholders.
  • Roadmap for uptaking and streamlining DiveSafe use in UCH and MPA.

DiveSafe Reference Architecture and Subsystems

In the Project Meeting in Thessaloniki, the consortium reached an agreement on the reference architecture to be deployed at the project pilot sites.

DiveSafe Subsystems

1.Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) / underwater (UW) scooter equipped with a mainboard and environmental and other sensors, manageable from an UW tablet.

2.UW tablet with Camera and Apps for surveying, navigation and mission planning, and health & safety alerting.

3.Underwater acoustic positioning (USBL) and communication system, for relaying data such as positioning and diver health data, to the surface support vessel.

4.Wearable sensors to monitor the physiological status of divers (Breathing/Heartbeat and Glycaemia monitoring).

5.Remote server that hosts the cloud database with raw and processed data from the underwater missions.

DiveSafe Pilot Sites

DiveSafe will be tested in controlled environments (laboratory pools and at the Istanbul Acquarium) to verify its functioning, then validated by marine archeologists at pilot sites in the Mediterranean Sea within underwater areas with cultural heritage (UCH) interest and in Marine Protected Areas (MPA).

DiveSafe participation in European Maritime Day 2019

DiveSafe project was presented during a pitching session at the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2019, which was organized on 16-17 May 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal. EMD is the annual two-day event during which Europe’s maritime community meet to network, discuss and forge joint action. It targets maritime professionals, entrepreneurs and ocean leaders. During the event, the project coordinator (ATLANTIS) presented the project and hold discussions with stakeholders and representatives of other related projects, for future collaborations on common fields.

Kick off Meeting of the approved projects under the Sustainable Blue Economy EASME call in Brussels, Belgium

The kick off meeting of the approved projects under the Sustainable Blue Economy EASME call took place in Brussels, Belgium, at the EASME premises on 29th of January 2019. The meeting was intended to present the Sustainable Blue Economy call objectives and discuss guidelines for the implementation of the approved projects.
